When Cinda was young, it was obvious that she was determined to live life by her rules, and she was prepared to take matters into her own hands to make people see her point of view. At 15 years old, while attending the boarding school, Miss Porter's, in Farmington, Connecticut, Cinda initiated a campaign to make church attendance voluntary instead of mandatory. Her disdain for the status quo earned her the ire of two local ministers who preached sermons against her.
Cinda's radical views fit right in at Sarah Lawrence College where she became a member of a strike committee that shut down the college in protest of the Vietnam War. Her support for the anti-war movement landed her in jail for her participation in an anti-war uprising at Columbia University.
Cinda's dogged determination to have her views rule the day led her to devote her senior year, while working as editor for the school paper, in an unsuccessful attempt to get rid of the school's new President because of a difference in philosophies.
It was while working as a journalist for the radical, left wing Liberation News Service that Cinda interviewed acclaimed director Emile de Antonio. Emile suggested that he was in need of a new assistant, and Cinda took up the position. She began her work as a documentary filmmaker almost immediately, and focused her first effort on the events of the Attica prison takeover.
She went on to make 3 more documentaries, although she hadn't realized at the time how intense the filming of Attica had been, she became ill and had to retreat into seclusion.
With her body and mind healed, Cinda decided to pursue a lifelong passion in theater where she met, and married, Manny Fox, the produce of the hit Broadway musical, Duke Ellington's Sophisticated Ladies.
Cinda spent her time writing for children's theater and wrote 3 original musicals with music by her son, William.
Cinda's recent works include a musical comedy, Family Fortune, Madame, the Story of Madame C.J. Walker and Te Quiero.
Today, Cinda Firestone Fox lives in Puerto Rico, where she fights for nesting grounds of the endangered sea turtles.
